Heavy-bodied, spicy and fragrant, Ethiopian Harrar coffee is a wild and exotic dry processed (natural) Arabica coffee that is grown on small farms in the Oromia region (formerly Harrar) in southern Ethiopia at elevations between 1,400 meters and 2,000 meters. The province of Harrar, is east of Addis Ababa, the country’s capitol.

Ethiopian Harrar coffee is generally highly rated and known for its winey and fruity, floral-toned acidity – bright in the cup, even intense – and tasting notes describe it with a rich and pungent, heady aroma that is wonderfully reminiscent of blackberries.

A good Harrar is bold and edgy with a complexity and spice tones that may include cinnamon, cardamom, blueberry jam, apricots, compote, even smoke, and with a lingering finish.

Coffee itself originated in Ethiopia and that plays an important role in why coffee from Harrar is so highly revered.

  1. Greater Genetic Variety Creates Wider Range of Flavors - Coffee grown outside of this region has lower genetic variety and thus less flavor variety.

  2. High Elevation Helps Coffee Beans Become Sweeter - Yirgacheffe coffee beans are grown at 1,500 - 1,800m elevation which is ideal for making coffee taste sweeter.

  3. Natural Processing Makes Coffee Taste More Distinctive - Natural-processing means hand-picking, hand-washing which is slower but also means the coffee has a more distinctive taste.

  4. The Blueberry Note Lives Here - This region is typically associated with notes of blueberry which if you’re a real coffee geek – is one of the ultimate flavors. The coffee coming out of these few villages comprising the Harrar area is some of the most amazing, sweet and floral coffee in the world.
